Slacker Brew

Hello and welcome to the Slacker Brew home page. My name is Craig Hanson and I have just recently moved to Tennessee and had previously been doing a little homebrewing with my brewmaster friend Nic Templeton in Seattle. After I arrived, I had met Lindell Cagle who was interested in starting to do homebrew. This site will chronicle our adventures in homebrewing, and hopefully grow to be a good repository of knowledge about the art in general. Enjoy...

Well, Lindell and I really like the Awesome Amber Ale, so I've decided to make us another batch. Our last kegged batch was running low, and we wanted to make sure we didn't run out! I've been reading about batch sparging online and it's supposed to significantly reduce the sparge times, so I thought I'd give that a shot on this batch too.

After several tasting sessions at our local Flying Saucer, I convinced Craig that we should brew a Rogue Chocolate Stout . We found a clone recipe at www.tastybrew.com, but our pal Nic reformulated it a bit here.

Now that we had an all grain under our belt, I felt it was time to attempt to make my favorite style of beer, an amber ale. We found a recipe on TastyBrew.com for an amber ale called Awesome Amber Ale by Mike Hausenfluck. With a title like that, how can you go wrong!

Brewing Simplified
Many home brewers look at Lagers as something approaching a mystic, confusing art of brewing left to experts and sages. While some styles like American Lager, and American Light Lager (Budweiser, Coors Light) can be very challenging for even the most advanced brewer to produce perfectly and consistently, most lager styles are brewed no different than any other beer. The only difference being fermentation and storage temperature.

I wanted to try making a porter, but couldn't find a good extract recipe for a porter, so decided it was time to try an all grain batch. I decided to make St.Chuck's Porter since it was a pretty easy all grain recipe that I had made with Nic before. I got all the instructions from Nic on which keg was used for which part and how to go about doing an all grain batch.

Brewing Simplified
Hello and welcome to the Brewing Simplified Series. In this series we will cover the basics of home brewing in a simple, easy to follow fashion. This will not be the most detailed information available, and it will leave some things out - that's ok. I do not intend to duplicate the many wonderful how-to books available. Consider these the "guick-start" instructions of home brewing. Just enough information to get you started.

Now that I had bought a house, it was time to start brewing again. This is the story of that first homebrew.
